My husband just lost his job. Will this be a problem for me renewing my spousal visa?
Am I right in understanding that when you first got your spouse visa your husband had a job but has become unemployed just before the renewal deadline?

Firstly, as you may know the three main points applicants for the spousal visa are judged on are;

the authenticity of the marriage (This is mainly to prevent the misuse of the system by those with fraudulent marriages), the financial stability (this is to ensure the couple are able to support themselves financially while in Japan), and the likelihood of the marriage lasting.

Because of this, your husband losing his job is likely to become a problem in terms of financial stability.

However, because there are no problems with the other two conditions it is very unlikely that your husband just happening to lose his job before the renewal deadline will be a reason for your application to be denied outright.

However, there is a need to provide paperwork and an explanation that proves your ability to support yourselves financially. This could either be because of your income or savings for example. However, in the case that you are not working or don’t have sufficient savings to support yourselves it may be possible to explain this if you are currently receiving financial support from family.

Further it will also prove important to provide evidence that your husband is currently looking for employment. This could be showing that he is registered with Hello Work for example.

The main point I want to get across, is that in the case your Japanese spouse isn’t working it is vital that you do not apply for renewal without providing sufficient explanation.
